2001 Centenary of Federation, Australian Capital Territory Three Coin Proof Set. On 1 January 1901, six British colonies came together in a Federation, and Australia embarked on a journey as an independent sovereign nation. The Australian Capital Territory would not have existed without Federation. Prior to the inauguration of the Commonwealth on 1 January 1901, the ACT as we know it today was part of the colony of New South Wales. The Australian Capital Territory came into existence on 1 January 1911 and in the same year the Federal Government launched an international competition for the design of the National Capital. On 12 March 1913, it was officially named Canberra, and Aboriginal name through to mean 'meeting place'.
