2001 Centenary of Federation,State Three Coin Proof Set, Tasmania. In September 1808, the first consignment of convicts reached the penal colony of Van Diemen's Land, later to become Tasmania. From these harsh beginnings, civil society slowly began to grow and transportation was ended in the early 1850's. In 1857 the recently named colony of Tasmania gained self government. By the beginning of the 1890's, it had a small but active economy and its people ere enthusiastic about the prospect of joining with the rest of Australia in a Federation.
