February 6 2002, marked the 50th anniversary or Golden Jubilee of the Accession of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth 2 to the Throne in 1952. The accession of Her Majesty followed the death of her father King George VI whil the Princess and her husband, Prince Phillip were in Kenya at the commencement of a tour of the British Commonweath. A new Sovereign succeds to the throne immediately upon the death of the reigning Monarch, and is proclaimed at an Accession Council traditionally held at St James Palace. Mintage 17,500.
