2017 $5 Battle of Beersheba Fine Silver Proof Coin. On the 31 October 1917 Australian troops from the 4th and 12th Light Horse Regiments attacked the Ottoman positions at Beersheba in one of the most gallant actions in the Middle East. Taking Beersheba would outflank the Ottomans at Gaza and enable the British to continue into Palestine. Charging into Ottoman artillery and rifle fire, the Australian light horsemen overran these defences and engaged the enemy with rifle and bayonet. The garrison surrendered and the light horse took Beersheba at the cost of 31 dead and 36 wounded. Certificate of Authenticity is included with this coin numbered 6.Mintage 5000.
